FRIENDS with breast cancer inspired WOW designer Fifi Colston to auction her piece Vena Immaculata at Roxy Cinema in Miramar tomorrow.

Ms Colston’s design represents breast cancer cells and was her World of WearableArt entry in 2011.

“I knew three women who had breast cancer at the time, so I did a little bit of research and that’s how I came with the piece,” she said.

“We are hoping to raise a useful amount of money for the Breast Cancer Foundation.”

She said photos of the cancer cells reveal them to be like delicate frilled bouquets.

The piece of art’s title poses the question “Beauty Disguising the Beast?”

Roxy Cinema hosts the public auction on Friday at 8pm, and events manager Carole Tredea says all visitors are welcome.

“The Roxy is very excited to be part of this year’s World of WearableArt festivities,” she said.

“We encourage all locals and visitors to Wellington alike to visit the Roxy to be inspired, and of course to be in to win a piece of WOW art,” she said.

All of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to foundation.

The piece created by Ms Colston, a veteran of wearable arts, a finalist and award winner with 19 entries in the show since 1995.

Her work has been exhibited many times in Nelson’s World of Wearable Art Museum and two of her pieces are currently touring New Zealand in the WOW Off The Wall Exhibition.

The entry has been on show at Roxy for the last two weeks ahead of its auction day on Friday.

The auction has already started on Trade Me.
